It's building — I can see it escalating

What's likely happening

Your child nervous system is filling up, you can see it happening before it tips over. At this age, big emotions arrive faster than the language to name them, and the body carries the load. Tension in the face, rising voice, faster movement, a short fuse: these are the warning signals. This is the moment to act, before the lobby overflows. Ask yourself which of the three Cs has gone quiet: does your child have enough genuine choice right now? Is the connection between you warm? And is the demand on them within their current capacity?

What to say

I can see something big is building. Let's take a breath together right now.

What to do
  1. 1Get physically close, lower your body to their level, soften your voice.
  2. 2Name what you see without judgment: "Your body looks really full right now."
  3. 3Try birthday candle breathing together: breathe in slowly, blow out long and slow. Two or three rounds.
  4. 4Offer a quick physical reset: shake your hands out, stamp your feet, do a big squeeze hug.
  5. 5Once the body settles even slightly, offer a simple choice: "Do you want to sit with me for a minute or go outside?"
What to watch for

Do not try to reason, explain, or problem-solve while the signal is building. The thinking brain goes offline when the alarm system is firing. Connection and body regulation come first. Everything else waits. Behaviors do not happen without a reason. A child who is frequently in a building state is almost always carrying more than is visible.
