Can't physically settle — too wired to sleep

What's likely happening

You might hear restlessness, requests to get up, complaints of being unable to sleep, or a body that simply will not be still. At this age, inability to settle often traces to one of three sources: residual physical energy that was not discharged during the day, an activated mind with open loops still running, or an environment or pre-sleep sequence that has not adequately signaled to the brain that sleep is coming.

What to say

Your body is not ready yet, but we can help it get there. Let's start with your breathing.

What to do
  1. 1Box breathing together: in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4. Even two or three rounds meaningfully activates the parasympathetic system.
  2. 2Ask: "Is there anything on your mind that is keeping you awake?" If yes, write it down or say it out loud to close the loop.
  3. 3Offer a body settling sequence: progressive relaxation starting from the toes, or a body scan where they notice each part of their body releasing.
  4. 4Ensure the environment is supporting sleep: cool, dark, quiet, no devices.
  5. 5If they need a gentle distraction to let the mind stop: an audiobook or calm music at low volume can sometimes bridge the gap between wakefulness and sleep better than silence.
What to watch for

A child who regularly cannot settle at bedtime despite a good routine may be under-exercised. Physical movement during the day, particularly outdoor play and active play, is one of the most reliable predictors of good sleep quality at night. If the day has been sedentary, the body may simply have unspent energy that is keeping the arousal level too high for sleep.
