Endless stalling — one more thing, always something

What's likely happening

You might hear: "Just five more minutes," "I am not tired," "I need to tell you something," and then another something, and another. Elementary-age stalling is often partly genuine (the brain is still active), partly relational (they want more connection), and partly habitual (stalling has worked before). All three are worth understanding before responding to any one of them.

What to say

You have time for one more thing before lights out. What do you want it to be?

What to do
  1. 1Give the choice genuine weight: one more story, one more conversation, one more question. Honor it completely, then close it.
  2. 2Build the wind-down sequence and hold it. The brain needs approximately 30 to 45 minutes of decreasing stimulation before it is ready to sleep. Start earlier than you think you need to.
  3. 3Close open loops before bed: "Is there anything on your mind that we should write down so your brain can let it go tonight?" A brief worry journal or tomorrow list empties the working memory lobby.
  4. 4Remove screens from the bedroom and from the hour before bed. Blue light suppresses melatonin by up to 50% and delays the brain transition to sleep readiness.
  5. 5Keep your re-entry calm and brief if they call out. The goal is not to ignore them but to not reward the stalling with engagement.
What to watch for

Children who stall because they want more relational connection are telling you something worth hearing. If the day has been full of parallel activities without genuine connection, the bedtime need is real. A brief, intentional connection point earlier in the evening, a genuine conversation at dinner, a short game together, often reduces the intensity of bedtime stalling. Behaviors do not happen without a reason.
